Accutane is a prescription drug used for the treatment of severe acne. Intended to be prescribed for only the most severe forms of acne, Accutane is the brand name for isotretinoin, which is a synthetic derivative of Vitamin A.

Although Accutane is indeed effective at treating acne, the side effects can be severe and even life threatening. In fact, Accutane is on the FDA’s list of the top three drugs with the most reported negative side effects. Accutane side effects include:

Accutane gained notoriety in the mid to late eighties for the severe birth defects caused by the drug, and then again for the high-profile suicide of Michigan Representative Bart Stupak’s 17-year old son in May of 2002.

Accuntane drug manufacturer, Hoffmann-LaRoche, has been accused of putting profits before people, because they failed to properly warn about the dangers and continued to market Accutane despite its side effects.

Since 1982, approximately five million people in the U.S. have taken Accutane, which is one of Hoffmann-La Roche’s top-selling drugs, posting over a billion dollars a year in sales. Given those revenue figures, it is no wonder the drug company failed to properly warn consumers about the dangerous side effects.
