How did Individuals Consume Toxic Water at Camp Lejeune?

The Hadnot Point treatment plant supplied main portion of Camp Lejeune, including barracks and workplaces. In 1982, 1984 and 1985, water from the Hadnot Point water distribution system was tested for toxic substances. The sampling measured TCE at 1,400 ppb and PCE at 100 ppb as well as the presence of benzene and vinyl chloride.

The Tarawa Terrace treatment plant provided drinking water to the Tarawa Terrace housing area at Camp Lejeune. In 1982 sampling of the Tarawa Terrace distribution system showed PCE as high as 104ppb and reached a maximum of 215 ppb in the 1985.

In the U.S., the maximum acceptable level for the contaminants for TCE and FCE are 5 ppb.

In 2017, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) filed a report on the drinking water at Camp Lejeune. The report reviewed the scientific literature on volatile organic compounds (VOCS). The report highlighted sixteen (16) disease where there was epidemiological evidence of an association with either TCE or PCE, the primary contaminants in the drinking water systems at Camp Lejeune. The report also assessed the evidence linking the sixteen diseases with vinyl chloride and benzene.

The report concluded that there was evidence to support of causation for the following conditions:

  • Kidney Cancer
  • Bladder Caner
  • Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma
  • Leukemia (Adult or Childhood)
